St1 Biofuels turns waste into biofuel in an environmentally friendly way
Kiertokapula Oy is in charge of receiving, treatment of and re-using waste in its operating area encompassing Kanta-Häme, Pirkanmaa and Uusimaa regions in Finland. As the composting plant previously used for treatment of bio-waste was about to reach the end of its useful life, the company wanted to find a new sustainable solution.
A suitable solution was found in St1 Biofuels' Bionolix concept; all bio-waste will be processed for biofuel in a Bionolix plant to be built in Hämeenlinna.
"We were able to offer a comprehensive and competitive solution. Our treatment process for bio-waste is energy-efficient and on top of that, the result is a highly refined and commercially valuable end product", says Mika Aho, Managing Director of St1 Biofuels Oy.
Easily reproduced solution
End products of the Bionolix plant will include bioethanol for traffic fuels and solid biofuel for production of electricity and heat. Both will be produced by treating bio-waste generated, for example, in households. When ready, the plant will treat roughly 15,000 tons of bio-waste and produce more than one million liters of bioethanol for traffic fuels and 5,000 – 6,000 tons of solid biofuel for production of electricity and heat.
"Preliminary test results indicate that the Bionolix process would beat all alternative bio-waste treatment types with the lowest carbon dioxide emissions. Moreover, the solution is easily reproduced wherever bio-waste is collected", says Aho.
The resulting bioethanol will be used for production of Finnish Refuel RE85 traffic fuel comprising 80-85% of bioethanol and gasoline components. To fill your tank up with RE85 fuel, the car must be a so-called flexifuel car able to run on both high blend ethanol and regular gasoline.
