Clean processes, materials and products
Today, global consumption of natural resources is almost 50 percent more than in the year 1980. To reverse this unsustainable trend and fight the climate change clean technologies are needed.
International comparisons of sustainability have ranked Finland among the best in the world. This has been achieved by tight environmental regulation, developing clean technologies and taking them in use as soon as possible – both in industry, cities and communities.
The Finnish traditional strengths are in the area of processes and process technologies for energy, forest, metal and mining industries, and related automation and ICT, which are exported throughout the world.
For instance the emissions from pulp and paper production have in Finland decreased to a small fraction of what they were few decades ago, although production has increased many times over.
Clean technologies in logistics and transport
Finland is located in the Northern Europe and transport distances within the country are long. Therefore we have developed many clean technologies in logistics and transport:
- Energy auditing tools focusing on transportation chains
- Emission control devices suitable for new vehicles and for retrofitting in existing fleets
Facts of the sector:
- One of the first countries breaking the fatal link between economic growth and the use of natural resources.
- The long term growth expectations of Finnish cleantech firms are 10–30% and some of over 30%.
- The share of clean technology exports is well above the figure for any other OECD country.
- Transportation chains audits typically find ways to cut energy use by 10–20% and total transportation costs by 3–7%.
