Selected investment opportunities in the Finnish cleantech sector

Renewable energy

Finland has the fastest growing renewable energy market in Europe over the next 5 years.

  • Commitment to implementing a new feed-in tariff system for wind and biogas by the beginning of 2010
  • Commitment  to EU target to increase the use of renewable energy to 38% by 2020 which is among the highest in the EU

Energy efficiency

The strong Finnish ICT and energy efficiency technologies are driving forces behind the smart grid and meter technologies. In addition, the new law in spring 2009 will boost the development of new user friendly Finnish smart metering applications in next years.

Finland also possesses the world's leading technology in energy efficient power electronics boosted further by the demand for energy efficient solutions and the planned large-scale renewable energy investments during next years.

The electrification of transportation creates opportunities for battery and power conversion technology providers.

Waste and recycling

The traditionally strong pulp & paper industry and the 80 per cent level of utilization of biomass have formed the strong basis for the development of the Finnish biomass industry and waste-to-energy solutions.

Business opportunities in Finnish industrial waste water treatment are excellent. The Finnish forest industry, with three companies among the TOP 5 globally, is a forerunner in the development of forest industry processes. These companies are the world's leading developers of internal recycling and reuse of treated water.

Currently Finland is below the EU average level of recycling although the National Waste Plan for Finland has set ambitious targets for recycling.

Green construction

The markets for low energy and passive housing are underdeveloped in Finland compared to for example Germany, although the consumer expectations for this sector are growing.
